I just reread The Heart is a Lonely Hunter which will always have my vote for the greatest American novel. It is heartbreaking and true. And best read in summer, the heat helps.

  1. Just read this for the first time last month. Wish I’d waited until the summer heat set in, but loved it all the same. (Also, I’m a composer, and for the first time ever, was not turned off by an author writing about music and music making.)

  2. i love carson mccullers. she is one of my favorite authors. i think i have my next book club author! now to chose the book:) one of the best is member of the wedding.

  3. I have this on my shelf and reading your post really makes me want to get in to it! the title alone is one of the greatest.

  4. i read this a summer or two ago. i was stunned by its absolute beauty– truly great american fiction. it is ideal for the summer to-do list, for anyone. i’m adding to my plans for the season. thanks for the reminder.

  5. here here.

  6. I’ve been wanting to read this for a long time. I think I’ll add it to my summer list. That quote is really compelling. I’ve seen the 1968 film adaptation, which is not bad, but not great.

  7. I read this book as a teenager so long ago; no life experience and really liked the movie.

  8. My favorite summer book when I was 12. Reread it for years after. It’s this book and To Kill A Mockingbird.

  9. Thanks for recommending this book. Wonderful

Carson McCullers maybe a household name in the US, it isn’t in the UK. But the quote you chose was so compelling that I was sure I wanted to read the book. Thank you for a wonderful recommendation and please continue sharing not just what you cook and eat, but what you read as well.
